There are a few different teddy bear puppy breeds and some people are confused as to exactly which breeds qualify for a teddy bear dog breed. On this page we will discuss the different breed types of teddy bear puppies and clear up any confusion you may have.

This information will be vital for those who are specifically looking at teddy bear puppies for sale, search through our comprehensive list of teddy bear puppy dog breeders here

The teddy bear puppy is a relatively new kind of dog that has been around only since the late 1990s. Interestingly, the name teddy bear does not actually refer to one specific breed. Most commonly, it is used to describe a cross breed between a Shih Tzu and a Bichon Frise. The name also is widely used to refer to various hybrids between the different breeds such as Shih Tzu, Toy poodles, Bichon Frise, Cocker Spaniels, Schnauzers, Yorkshire Terries and Daschunds.

    Zuchon Teddy Bear Dog

The cross breed between a Bichon Frise and a Shih Tzu is commonly known as a Shichon, Tzu Frise or Zuchon. This is the most common type of teddy bear puppies breed and is generally what people think of when referring to teddy bear dogs. This breed gained the name ‘Teddy Bear’ due to its small size, fluffy coat, delicate features, large eyes and their general resemblance to the stuffed teddy bear. On average, they grow to be nine to twelve inches from the shoulder and will weigh between eight to twenty five pounds when fully grown.

Zuchons are hypoallergic dogs and are suitable for people with dog allergies. They usually have a longer coat that will not shed much if at all it does shed. However, the longer coat may need more grooming and maintenance time.

They have a great personality and are lively, well mannered and playful. The zuchon breed becomes devoted to their families and will need much attention. It is important to understand that they don’t do well if left alone for a long period of time. They are easily trained (see our top training teddy bear puppies tips) ,thus you are sure to enjoy their company because of their good behavior.

A zuchon puppy makes for a fairly good watch dog as he or she will bark to alert members of the family that somebody is nearby. When socialized at a rather earlier age, zuchon puppies are good with other pets and will get along very well with children.

The Zuchon hybrid breed has longevity with an average life expectancy of between twelve to fifteen years. Through their lives, they are usually healthy and don’t show congenital defects like the other purebreds.

    Mini Teddy Bear Puppy

The mini teddy bear puppies are a more recent cross breed between a Maltese and a Shih Tzu. They have a small body, smashed in face, large eyes that are deeply set and large droopy ears. Particularly small teddy bear puppies are also known as teacup teddy bear puppies.

Typically, the mini teddy bears grow to between nine and twelve lbs. They continually maintain their puppy like characteristics throughout their lives. For this reason, this breed is the ideal dog for anybody who doesn’t want their puppy to seem like he or she has grown up. Like the fully sized teddy bear dogs, they have multiple colored coats thus making each mini teddy bear puppy unique.

    Poochon

The poochon is a designer dog breed that is a cross between a Bichon Frise and a Poodle.

Teddy bear puppy breeders specifically developed the Poochon to suit people with allergies to dogs. This is because they have non-shedding coats. Poochon coats come in a variety of colors and are coarse and medium long with rather loose curls. In addition, their coats are more hypoallergenic as compared to other dogs. This characteristic was inherited from the poodle dog. However, poochons will require grooming since their coats continue to grow yet they will not shed.

Poochons inherited an intelligence that is higher than average and are considered to be among the top intelligent puppy breeds. For this reason, it is easy to train your poochon puppy and she or he will quickly learn your nuances. Poochons are also highly alert and will be sure to alert their owners of any unusual sounds or situations. Poochons enjoy playing and will need a daily exercise of at least thirty minutes.

    Shih-poo

The shih-poo is a domestic dog that is rather small. It is an offspring of a Shih Tzu and a Poodle.

They come in a variety of colors which include all white, all black, sable, cream and any combination and mix thereof. Their size varies depending on whether the poodle parent is a miniature, standard breed or of the teacup type. Typically, a miniature poodle and a Shih Tzu will produce a shih-poo that will averagely weigh ten to fifteen pounds as an adult. They are also highly intelligent and have low shed coat.

    The Teddy Bear Pomeranium

The Pomeraniums often known as Pom Pom is a breed of dog of the Spitz, or Nordic type. They originated in Germany as a favorite lap dog of the royal court and today most pomeraniums still act like a member of the royal class.

This teddy bear dog breed has a much shorter snout hence it is commonly referred to as “smooshed face”. As a result of this feature, the eyes of the Pomeranium appear to be closer to the nose and the cheeks appear to be fuller. Weighing less than 7 pounds, these teddy bear dog breeds are very small in size but have a big personality.

Additionally, Promeraniums have a profuse double coat that requires regular brushing but are otherwise easy to care for. They like to bark but this can be controlled with training.

The teddy bear Pomeranium are also an amazing breed of dog. Not only are they loyal, they are incredibly cute, intelligent and brave. They are therefore a great breed of dog that will fit well in any family.

    The Teddy Bear Golden Doodles

Teddy bear golden doodles were first bred in North America in the mid 1990’s. The golden doodle breed is a cross-breed between a Golden-Retriever and a Poodle and is believed to benefit from Hybrid-Vigor (outbreeding enhancement) because of their diversified gene-pool. They are fun loving, have a happy personality, enjoy taking part in family activities like swimming, camping, walking, hiking and they just adore other pets and children.

This dog breed comes in many colors, sizes, coat types and generations. As a hybrid breed, the golden doodles are generally healthier with a life expectancy of 13-15 years.

The golden doodle is a low- to non-shedding breed, however to prevent matting you need to brush them as often as possible. A golden doodle’s coat also requires professional grooming regularly. With their adorable appearance, even temperaments, good health and hypoallergenic coats they are not only the perfect family pets, they are also the most popular designer dogs today.

These dog breeds are also very easy to train, caring, intuitive and they thrive on social interaction. Always smiling, the golden doodles have a remarkable zest for life and a slight bounce in their step. This therefore makes them an excellent guide dog or therapy dog.

Grooming and Care of Teddy Bear Puppies

In general, teddy bear puppies are a low or non shedding breed. Their coats can either be kept long or clipped to a short puppy cut. To prevent their coats from being tangled and matted, teddy bear puppies need frequent grooming. They need to be brushed daily and bathed regularly.

If you treat your teddy bear puppy well, you are sure to have a best friend for the rest of his or her life.

Do you have a good vet? Our Pom lived to be a few months past 17 and there are genetic illnesses such as collapsed trachea, luxating patella, pancreatitis, to name a few.
      3-8k per surgery.
The tiny ones, mixed breed simply to look a particular way often bring out the flaws. There are many

Before you buy just for looks, go to some AKC dog shows and talk to multiple breeders.
