Why are Shichons / Zuchons called teddy bear dogs?

Zuchons have small size and cute fluffy fur. Because of that they can be often confused with stuffed teddy bears. All of the dogs that have these characteristics are in the group of teddy bear dogs.

History

Shichons or Zuchons are a designer dog which means that they are a mix two other breeds. They are a cross between the Mediterranean Bichon frise and oriental Shih Tzu. It is a relatively new breed, but it has become quite popular in a short period of time. The Zuchon is not an official breed, but only a cross-breed. If the dog’s popularity keeps growing it may become an official breed. The name is a combination of two breed names Shih Tzu and Bichon frise. It has a hybrid vigor and they probably have better health than their ancestors.

Coat and colors

The Zuchon has fluffy coat which can be in different colors like: silver, white, black, grey, cream tan, red, apricot, chocolate brown or a combination of these. Their fur is soft and long flowing and it can be silky or curly. They don’t shed. They require brushing few times a week because of their long fur. Their maintenance cost can be low if the owner decides to keep the dog in teddy bear cut.

Temperament

These dogs have a great personality with big heart. They are well-mannered, lively and playful. Sometimes they can show stubbornness, but with training this can be controlled. They like to bark, but this can be controlled with training too. They accept training easily. They have good manners and are usually happy, gentle and social. They require attention, but give it back in return to their families. They don’t like to be left alone. They can be good therapy dogs and want to be active. Zuchons get along with other pets and children if they are introduced in a good way. Also, they can be good watch dogs, if there is a danger they will bark to alert the owner.

Size

These dogs’ average height is from 9 to 12 inches and they approximately weigh from 8 to 25 pounds when they are fully grown. They are recognized by their large eyes, soft coat and endearing face.

Average age

This hybrid breed is known for its longevity. They live approximately from 12 to 15 years. They have good health and don’t show congenital defects. Because they are the first generation of this dog breed nothing is for sure and results will show in the future. When they enlarge the health issues may increase. Other designer dogs have health issues with epilepsy, deafness, liver disease and canine hip dysplasia.

What’s so unique about them?

These dogs are also known as Shichon or fuzzy wuzzy puppy. They are so cute and loveable. They have longer coat and don’t shed. They are hypoallergenic dogs and are suitable for any family there is.

Love teacups…I am a first time owner. Thinking mix of maltese and shitzu…but not sure what to look for to make sure it is in good health. A breeder contacted me and had what I am looking for…but she said it was the runt…and will be tiny.

I am interested in a teddy bear dog, I live in Barrie,Ont. Where can I find one in Ontario? How much do these dogs cost?I want a pup from a good breeder! i want a happy pup with no health issues,de-wormed,first shots and at least eight weeks with Mom. I read this is the right time to adopt!
