Tips on How to Boost Your Connection With Your Pet

February 1, 2020

Humans care for pets because more often than not, humans find comfort with the fact that there will always be a living being that will permanently be there for them no matter what, and such is the loyalty of furry friends such as cats and dogs. If you do own a pet other than a cat or a dog, for sure you will be able to generate an instant connection to them by being attentive to their needs and providing their basic necessities. However, if you are a dog owner, your connection with your pet tends to go deeper and here are some tips on how you can boost your bond with your dog even more.

Implement Consistent Boundaries

Your pets need boundaries in order to feel safe and secure. Dogs in particular become so easily confused with inconsistent boundaries. For instance, you may allow your canine to sleep with you in your bed as a treat on a particular day of the week, but then restrict him in doing so for the rest of the other days, and let him sleep outside your room instead. This will generate confusion in your dog because for him, it is not clear where he is supposed to sleep. There are instances wherein the inconsistent rules may lead to your dog’s bad behavior, and as a result, both of you may get frustrated with each other. Thereby, instead of a deeper bond, there is a great chance that you would prefer to stay away from each other’s way.

Be Attentive

Know your pet’s personality by being attentive to them. Learn what they like and what they don’t like because your pets also have preferences just as much as humans do. Make it a point to go with what they want, as long as it is reasonable, and avoid what they generally get irritated with. For example, if your dog is not much of a hugger, try shaking his paws instead. Try to observe your pet’s body language when you do pat his head or rub his ears for a while before eventually stopping. Your dog nuzzling you afterwards is a good indication that he loved what you did to him. The key thing is just as much as humans have boundaries, your pets do too and your bond with prove to be stronger if you respect each other and know each other’s boundaries, simply by initially being attentive.

Spend Quality Time with Them

Just as humans long for quality time spent with their loved ones, your pets also need your time and attention. Observe your pet and be attentive about the things he likes because this is a good avenue where you can start building a bond with your pet. If you have a high-energy dog, get on the ground and play a game of fetch or tug-of-war with him. In the same manner, if you have a cat, allow him to stay for hours on your lap, just stroking his fur. Not only is this good for your pet, but you will benefit a lot in this too. Being physically active with your dog can help you release your stress and frustration while lounging around with your cat can help you calm your mind. In the end, you will find that your connection with your pet is significantly enhanced.

Train Your Pet

Training your pet is one of the best ways to strengthen your bond because it gives you the opportunity to learn together. According to the experts behind the Dog House Bone, a dog blog that focuses on the nutrition, skin care, training, and treats for dogs can prove to be beneficial if you are in the process of training your dog. Keep in mind that whether you train for fun or to enter competitions, training is a great way to bond because both you and your pet are invested in learning new skills together. Come to think of it, training your pets is also another way of spending quality time with them.

Show Them Affection

Don’t hold back in showing your pets how much you love them by showering them with your affection. You may not be aware but your pets greatly feel what you are feeling. They are able to sense whether you are happy or sad. Regardless of what you may be feeling, channel it in a manner that will allow you to show your affection for your pet. For instance, if you are feeling happy, dance around with your dog and gently rub his ears from time to time. In the same manner, if you are feeling down, just sit around and hug your cat, and you can even cry if you want to. In both instances, your pets will feel your affection because you are celebrating with them on your good times, and you are not afraid to show your vulnerability to them during your bad times.

Build Trust

Last but definitely not the least, build trust between you and your pet in order to be able to have a stronger bond. There are particular training techniques that you can do in order to do so, but as much as possible, avoid the negative or fear-based strategies because instead of building trust, it can prove to destroy your connection. Lean towards positive training techniques such as giving your pets some treats or rewards for a successfully completed mission or good behavior. Always remember though that boosting your connection with your pets doesn’t happen overnight, much like trust isn’t earned in a day, which is why it is important for you to be patient during the entire process.

Pets, such as cats and dogs, offer humans the comfort that they need, especially during the moments that they need it the most. It can therefore be deemed that humans need pets just as much as pets need their owners to love and care for them. It goes without saying that this world is truly amazing and it is just incredible how intimate bonds are formed between different species.

Love teacups…I am a first time owner. Thinking mix of maltese and shitzu…but not sure what to look for to make sure it is in good health. A breeder contacted me and had what I am looking for…but she said it was the runt…and will be tiny.
